RWTH Aachen University is one of the leading technology oriented universities in Germany and Europe. Since its founding 1870 engineering has been carried out at a high level both in education and research. With its very dense network of industry contacts, research at RWTH Aachen University is demand driven and continuously ranks in the first places of European university evaluations. Research at the ITA covers the complete textile production chain. Six groups research production technology, develop new materials and discover innovative concepts for technological products. The ITA employs about 40 scientific employees from various scientific and engineering disciplines and over 120 student assistants. Previous experience relevant to the tasks: The Smart Textiles group has an extensive background in integrating electronic components into textiles. The smart switch, that has been developed and patented by the ITA, is a textile switch for closing electrical contacts. It is washable and endures 150.000+ cycles of operation. At the moment the product is commercialised in the automotive industry. In the Smart Rope project, sensor threads have been implemented into braided ropes to monitor stress and rupture. In another European Research project (ProFiTex, Contract 228855, NMP Programme) ITA recently started the development of a new generation of fire-fighting jacket. Sensors inside the jacket form a network that gathers data about the fire fighter’s status and position. Data transmission to a remote location of the fire fighting mission will be achieved by using a braided security rope outfitted with data transmitting capabilities.
